I was able to play in the Indianapolis Open Tournament in August. It was a 5 round tournament with 48 players in the U1800 section. I was rated 33rd out of the 48 and was very pleased to finish in a tie for 11th place. It was also nice to see some of the people from Indiana that I had played against 25 years ago.

In the first round I played a 12yr old rated at 1780. We played to an interesting draw. I was determined to not allow an oversight lose this game like I did in the World Open.

In the 2nd round I played a young man from Detroit who was rated quite low. However he had played a draw against a player rated higher than me in the 1st round. I had an advantage for most of the game, he spent a very long time on his moves and became very short on time. I was able to capitalize on this to score a win!

In the 3rd round I played an older man (ok he was probably a couple of years younger than me) who was quite nice. I didn't do a good job of concentrating at the start of the game and allowed him to win a pawn in a superior position. I then had a little team meeting and regained my focus to rally for a draw.

The 4th round was played against a higher rated player from Illinois. I was able to get an advantage in the opening and turn it into a nice win.

I went into the 5th round tied for 5th in my section. As usual I was paired up. When the game started I was excited to see that I was going to be able to play one of my favorite variations! After the 2nd move I was horrified to realize that I didn't remember any of the moves I was to make! Yikes!!! Panic stricken I played from behind thru out the game but finally succumbed to a superior position for my only loss.
